As of late, I have been distracted by everything that has nothing to do with the internet, much less this blog. I've been on an unforeseen sabbatical...of sorts. It's convenient that I consider January to be a month intended for regrouping, sorting, the clearing of trash...and quiet. I've been quiet everywhere except Twitter...which is strange for someone (me) that is typically too long winded to appreciate the simple elegance of the platform. But January is over and things (life) are picking back up...so I figured I should revisit this place.

I know I made some promises about future posts. I'm breaking said promises and I don't have any new promises to mention (or break). Instead, I'm going to share some of my January quiet. Below, a list of interests and distractions.

Every Christmas and birthday, my parents give me awesome books. This year they gave me Annie Leibovitz's new project, Pilgrimage. It's lovely and quiet...a nice match for winter moods.

I turned 30 today. Originally, I planned to ignore this day altogether but instead I bought a blender/food processor (all-in-one...yes!), saturated my liver with booze and have been indulging in all sorts of self-deprecating jokes about aging, death, etc. And up until 20 minutes ago I had been "unplugged" from the internet for the last 5 days...then I signed on to facebook and the first thing in my newsfeed was this picture, posted by my mother (GAME ON Mom). Anyway...this is me as a tot : Mischievous but well-intentioned.

Come back towards the end of the week...I promise to piece together some decent posts including a recap of my 30 for 30 list.

To resolve any possible confusion : "House of Lo" was the facebook moniker for my print shop.

In other quick news...House of Lo/The Print Shop is closed but it will re-open this summer with the release of my zine. I'm pretty amped about it since I've been dreaming of this project for many years. For those who don't know, I use to be quite the zine-maker back in the day. Titles like "Tantrum : Feminism for Feisty Fourth Graders" and "Who Has Nappy Hair?" are some of my more notorious releases during my youth. While this upcoming release will probably lack the puberty-induced rage that seemed to drive my previous publications...it will still rock. So, stay on the lookout.

John T. Williams Memorial Totem Pole Project.

One of the highlights of our trip was the time we spent with Rick Williams at the John T. Williams Memorial Totem Pole Project. John Williams, was a Ditidaht master carver, who was shot and killed by a Seattle officer on August 30, 2010 (while carrying a legal pocket knife, which he used for carving). Rick was kind enough to chat with us for some 30 minutes; entertaining all of our questions. Like Salvation Mountain, I was inspired by Rick's dedication to his medium...and the totem is a beautiful celebration of John's life and work. I must have circled the totem 15 times and found new intricate details to fawn over each roundabout.

I already gushed about how every visitor to Seattle should stop in at the public library...I'd like to add this to the Seattle list. Cost : FREE...but we made a donation and you should too!

Saturday Morning with Sawyer

From a recent family portrait session...I realize this is a diversion from regular programming.
Photographing kids is my jam. Out of all the branches of photography and 10 years of working in the medium, I never imagined that this particular genre would be one of my favorites. I find their methods of self expression and communication to be really entertaining. Since I'm often the stranger with a big camera and crazy hair, it's interesting to watch them decide how they feel about me and the process. Left to their own devices (and no one telling them to say "cheese") they unleash a plethora of photographic opportunity. I'm interested in the real deal...hyper, mischievous, cranky, shy, jovial and whatever else they've got to offer. Obviously, most kids lack a filter...and I like when people are filter-less in front of my camera.

NOTE: During this particular session we hung out at Sawyer's house and did all the usual things he does on a Saturday morning : Made breakfast (including a delicious espresso for me, courtesy of Sawyer's dad), fed the chickens and picked some vegetables in the backyard, then a quick jam on the drums. Definitely one of my favorite sessions yet.

Yep...it merits fireworks. I'm finally doing another print shop (it's been over 1.5 years, since the last one). You probably already know the drill :
- I'm selling prints, note cards and calendars. All of the images are my Polaroids (and some Fuji Instax) from 2002 - 2011.
- Stock is super limited. Get it while you can.
- Shop online any day or time until January 2nd (also known as the day I turn 30).
- Paypal is the accepted form of payment and you don't even need a Paypal account to take part in the fun.
- At this time of year, I'm prone to getting drunk on eggnog and giving out discounts...so stay tuned here, to stay apprised of said generosity.
- I'll probably tell you how pleased and flattered I am if you buy something...and I really will be.
- This project was a complete labor of love and I'm super pleased I've finally got something to show after all those hours of CSS coding ;)

Of course, the moment I swear to post more often and with more interesting tidbits is when I simultaneously become overloaded with work/obligations. I should know better. In the meantime, I wanted to stop in and share a few things that I've been enjoying in those (currently elusive) moments of leisure time.

- Whenever possible, I'm completely immersed in this book. So much so that I'm weeks behind in my blog/twitter/flickr browsing. Literature majors (holla!) get pumped...someone wrote a marvelous story about our neuroticism (amongst other things). Definitely my favorite read of the year. Will someone please gab with me about it!?!?!

- Autumn De Wilde is the cat's pajamas...check out her regularly updated blog for her latest projects and her new book which will delight all the Beck fans out there.

- Speaking of photo books...

Francesca Woodman : edited by Corey Keller...I'm adding this to my entirely too long wishlist of photography monographs. I recently perused a copy and almost cried when I couldn't take it home.

- Finally got around to reading the October (I told you I was behind in my reading) issue of Vanity Fair. While flying over the Ozarks with 6 children screaming bloody murder for some 75 minutes, I immersed myself in a whiskey and this article about Courtney Love. Not that I've read a ton of articles on her, but I definitely think there has been a consistent trend in journalism that surrounds her over the decades. This article was different...more interesting than most and a refreshing POV as well. I should note that it doesn't come as a surprise to me that I enjoyed this article since it was written by the immensely talented Nancy Jo Sales. She is the primary reason why I continue my subscription to VF (that and my mother's inability to say "NO" to telemarketers hawking subscriptions). This Sales' article is superb (and it's been turned into a script by one of my favorite authors...I'm waiting with baited breath for its release).

- Does anyone else like this song? I'm pretty sure I heard it on Gossip Girl (I dare you to judge me). Can't seem to get it out of my head. Reminds me of the many nights I spent smoking clove cigarettes & drinking awful instant coffee while listening to Tori Amos & Fiona Apple (yes, that was my idea of a great Saturday night in '95).

- One last thing...and you are the first to hear : I'm opening a little shop for a short time in December. Limited edition prints, note cards and perhaps a calendar. So, maybe you should add the House of Lo (no, that's not the name of my shop, I'm just being silly) to your shopping and wish lists this year.

I had a full-on love affair with this Rem Koolhaus and Joshua Ramus designed building. Though I love many periods and styles of architecture, I typically gush over structures constructed prior to 1970 (much like my preference for cameras). So, it came as sort of a surprise to me that I would be so thrilled by this contemporary structure. And the fact that it's meant to hold some of the things I treasure most in this world (books & periodicals), only makes it better. I truly believe a trip to this place should be a priority for all visitors to Seattle...it's really that fantastic.

Other Notes :
- Finally got my copy of Blue Nights and though I'm only halfway into the book, I do believe it's just as good (if not better) than I had anticipated.

- Thanks to Lily's post, I was reminded of yet another book I want to read ASAP...because like Didion, I will read anything that Jeffrey Eugenides puts to paper (or Kindle...if you like your books in that form). Note : Virgin Suicides rocked my junior-high mind and I've been a fan ever since.

- Excited for my eyes that will surely be delighted by the Gaultier exhibit, opening Sunday at the Dallas Museum of Art.

- I'm over a year late to the party but in case you haven't heard, this album is lovely.

- And a little shoutout to the awesome technicians at Richard Photo Lab...they are the peeps responsible for these gorgeous scans. Really, these people made my freakin' month with these supremely clean (and true to my aesthetic) scans. Love.

The Change Up

One of the primary reasons I enjoy reading blogs is for the exchange of information that happens both in content and comments. Info is my jam and thus, I consume buttloads of media. Ironically, I don’t share...which is beyond ridiculous for more than a handful of reasons. For years, the soul of the web has centered around sharing content. Admittedly, there was a point when social media was my job and honestly, it’s a decent size of my job now. But for some reason that escapes me, I’ve been doing a mediocre job of it here. Compared to countless others, I’m downright horrible at managing my twitter / pinterest / facebook / linkedin / google+ (is that everything??) accounts. I’ll probably never reach 10,000 tweets (is that even a large amount?), which is strange because I’m one chatty chick.

For years I’ve thought (like millions of others) that the best blogs are the ones that have something interesting to share...a takeaway of some sort...otherwise, they seem pointless. 10+ years ago I probably wouldn’t have said that. Back then blogs read like diaries. Now, for the types of blogs I tend to read, the intimacy is present but I might learn a new recipe, discover an old camera or start crafting afterwards. It’s different.

When I started this joint, I thought of it as a photo journal...a place that could help give me perspective on my work. Though it’s somewhat rare that I don’t feel like photographing; I knew this place could hold me accountable. Even when I only got 2 hits a day, I still felt a need to post and to post I have to regularly be shooting personal work (I rarely ever post commissioned or commercial work here). While I’m pleased that I’ve maintained it for over a year now, I know it’s time for it to grow a bit. Not growth in terms of traffic (I suck at controlling that aspect, anyhow) but in usefulness.

The primary driver of traffic to this site (oh wow, my old day-job speak is sneaking in) are the camera porn posts. You wouldn’t believe how many people google Polaroid camera models all day long and from all over the world. And there have been some peeps continually loving on the Mamiya TLR as well. Seeing that people find value in this tiny spot on the massive web makes me happy...but shit, I’m hardly scratching the surface. Reading Jamie’s post and examining (yeah, it’s fun to call it that) the analytics for this site, reminded me to do what I’ve always known is the awesome thing to do. ←Perhaps I should also try to post something other than my stream of consciousness ramblings.

It’s likely that I’ll continue to be really lazy on the other platforms. And while I’d rather not start a tangent about how lackadaisical (love that word) I am on commenting while visiting other blogs...I’m going to try on that front...and I’m going to try here.

Starting with...some things I’ve been enjoying as of late.

- The new Joan Didion...obviously, I’m really excited hence mentioning before it’s actually been delivered to my eager hands. But I foresee spending my Sunday completely enthralled with this book and a pot or two from my trusty Chemex.

- I thoroughly loved Nip/Tuck (at least during the initial 3 or 4 seasons)...no surprise, I’m loving this new Ryan Murphy creation. Note : out of nowhere I’ve developed a horror movie interest...they’re so damn funny. And since we’re on the topic of TV...Happy Endings keeps me in hysterics once a week.

- A nice little interview that induced a bit of a girl crush.

- Does every photographer have a favorite legendary image maker? I think so. Here’s one of mine and rejoice! his blog is awesome.

- This jam from White Denim has been on constant play in my house. Thanks for posting Gorilla vs Bear.

An agricultural anomaly, formed in 1905, the Salton Sea is the largest body of water in California at 375 square miles. Nestled in the southeastern corner of the state, just 35 miles from Palm Springs, the area was once a desert basin with a few small farming communities and the Southern Pacific railroad. But when the Colorado River swelled and subsequently destroyed existing irrigation systems, the basin filled with water from the river for over 18 months, creating the Salton Sea. By the 1920’s, the area was a freshwater lake, attracting unique waterfowl and developers began marketing the area to the Hollywood glamourati as a spectacular getaway complete with restaurants, golf courses and a yacht club (designed by Desert Modernist genius, Albert Frey).

For decades, tourists from around the world spent their leisure time at the Salton Sea but by the 1960’s the makeup of the sea began to drastically change and so did the tourist traffic. Between the salty makeup of the existing desert soil, no outflow and salty inflow, the lack of rain (less than than 3 inches per year) and industrial waste from Mexicali, the Salton Sea morphed from star-studded retreat to salt-filled nightmare that destroyed ecosystems...and eventually consumed many structures throughout the area. Currently, the Salton Sea is about 25% saltier than the Pacific Ocean and is 227 feet below sea level, which is 5 feet higher than the lowest spot in Death Valley. But as the salt continues to rise everything else seems to fall apart, as evidenced by the shorelines covered in fish skeletons. At it’s current state, most species of fish are unable to survive, with the exception of tilapia.

Despite, it’s glittering tourist days being a thing of the past, the Salton Sea has continued to be an important habitat for birds. Over the course of its 100+ years lifetime, 400 species of birds have been documented at the Salton Sea. And as the California wetlands continue to disappear, the Salton Sea is viewed by many to be an important habitat for displaced inland wetland species.

Over the decades, many people have speculated as to what will save the Salton Sea but time continues to pass, salt continues to reign and remediation is slow.

Unfortunately, our time at the Ace was pretty short. Once we made our way from LA to PS, we headed straight to the Salton Sea (more on that later). After getting lost in a sea of palm tree & date farms (coolest farms this texan has seen in a while) and a little bit of a holdup at the border patrol (no worries, these kids are alright), we arrived at the Ace just in time for the important things : food, drinks and vinyl playing. So, I'll cover our dinner later, but for now it's brunch at King's Highway.

Admittedly, I wasn't very adventurous while dining at King's Highway. Not that I have a distaste for new or unfamiliar foods, I just ate sandwiches every damn day of our vacation...I really don't know why. But breakfast foods are my absolute favorite foods and as you can imagine, I eat a lot of eggs and have sampled my fair share of egg sandwiches. So, the Breakfast ALT sandwich was an ideal pick for me. And though it was delightful with it's buttery brioche bun and harissa aioli (amongst other things), I really did regret not getting the Ricotta Hot Cakes with bananas. I envied the mouth of the girl who sat nearby enjoying them. My boo ordered basically the same sandwich as mine but on wheat toast, no sprouts (this is called the ALT Sandwich on the all day menu). Now, for anyone that has ever dined with my husband and I, you know how I always insist that we get something drastically different so I can sample/photograph as much as possible. Alas, I obviously didn't get my way this time around. All in all, the meal was good, the atmosphere was better and fortunately, I have reason to return (Ricotta HOT CAKES).

Since renting a vacation home for our wedding, I've been hooked on VRBO. While I do love hotels (their design and comfy beds); they are outrageously expensive in some cities and not always convenient to the activities we enjoy while visiting a city. For this particular trip, we really wanted to be in a neighborhood and not a touristy district, so this apartment in Silver Lake was a great fit. While the pictures on the listing we're helpful, they truly didn't depict how huge this apartment is (and perhaps my images don't even do it justice). It's a great price for two people but really I think a small family or a girlfriend's trip are a better fit for this spot...because there is sooo much room. A few things that I loved about this rental (in no particular order) :

Massive outdoor/rooftop space.
Old building with tons of character.
Awesome location...very close to my (current) favorite (LA) neighborhood : Los Feliz.
Decor is interesting and comfortable.
Great kitchen & plenty of equipment, cookware & utensils.
Awesome bathroom : big shower, jacuzzi tub, vintage scale, penny tile floors!
Lots of light.
Same cost (if not a bit cheaper) as a tiny hotel room in a mediocre neighborhood.
Fantastic management/owners.
Plethora of interesting books...seriously the bookcase is worth renting this place, alone.

Thanks to Blair (friend & lakehouse host), a bunch of (already) rowdy chicks got really hammered and raised hell on the shores of Possum Kingdom Lake. All the elements of a good time were present : fireworks, booze, chocolate, water, wedding crafts and a perfectly slow-cooked 11lb brisket. And to top it off, Lisa (the bride & resident makeup/hair guru) gave my sad feet a pedicure with her fancy gel nail polish kit (amazing!). Oh, and we created a new dance/floating-in-the-lake move : THE SEAHORSE! But pictures of those stellar moves and few others had to be omitted because they were too damn graphic...even for this blog.

My girlie married her sweetheart last weekend. The weekend marked the end of two months worth of awesome gatherings celebrating their relationship and the beginning of a new adventure for the happy couple. Throughout the months, I've been hoarding all the snaps from their event...now I can finally share them. I'll start with the bridal shower which included an evening by the pool, with some of my fave ladies and amazing food (that we devoured before I remembered to photograph it). NOTE: I wasn't the formal photog for any of these events...so these are truly just snapshots for the sake of remembering (because we consumed enough alcohol that we might need these to jog our memories).

Just looking at these pictures puts my mind at ease...the San Jose is that serene. It's kind of crazy how tranquil this place is; especially when considering that it sits on such a busy street (South Congress). This hotel is my idea of perfect : beautiful spaces, located central to all my favorite activities and if you don't feel like going anywhere you can just enjoy their amenities (which are abundant). Seriously, if you ever have the chance to stay here DO IT.

I guess its become obvious that I'm on a farmers market (photographing) kick this summer. My girlfriends and I were on our way out of town when we accidentally stumbled upon the HOPE Farmers Market. What a find! There are lots of great vendors and I could easily see myself 1-stop-shopping there...which is a major perk in my opinion. While visiting I got the chance to learn all about kombucha teas from the nice guys at Wunder-Pilz . I tasted a few of their delicious teas and I'm officially hooked. Check out their site for more information.
I also spent some time playing with bat guano (poop) but I'll save that story for another time.

While working on this story, I had the opportunity to visit the Coppell Farmers Market (located in Coppell, Texas). On my first visit, I was surprised to learn that a couple of my favorite local vendors (Oak Cliff Coffee & Kessler Cookies) sell their wares at this market and I gained a few new faves by the end of the morning. If I lived closer I would definitely visit this market weekly. All the produce was in tip-top condition and I nearly passed out when I tasted the artisan breads, local honey and canned goods. If you live on that side of town I highly suggest you make it your summer priority to visit this market.

DO NOT LEAVE this market without purchasing a batch of Kessler Cookies' Oatmeal Cranberry...I promise, those cookies will rock your world.

Some days start out average...emails, phone calls and if I'm lucky an hour or two of shooting. But today went from average to awesome once I arrived at Cosmic Cafe for lunch with my ladies. It's rare that any of us have the ability to meet in the middle of the week but Alice was in town (for what I wish was a longer period of time) so any hang time we could get was treasured. After a delicious lunch that included plenty of naan, curry, samosas and my favorite dish, the Cosmic Stir; we headed upstairs to the meditation room for a little lesson in AcroYoga from our resident yogi, Alice. Is Hipstamic still the rage? I don't know. But in case you've ever wondered why some people bother to use film and funny toy plastic cameras instead of iphones to make a "vintage" looking picture...these images are a testament to why film is my first choice. It looks a hell of a lot better. Though I adore my iphone camera for its convenience and a few other obvious reasons...the ol' fashioned way is a lot prettier and more exciting (I'm speaking of the delayed gratification that accompanies waiting for film to process). And if you need another reason to love film : NO PHOTOSHOP-ing! Gotta love that!

For the photo-nerds in the house: This is Kodak Ektachrome...a E6 (aka "slide" or "chrome" film). Cross processed.

Furthermore...
since this blog is long overdue for some camera porn how about another installment in the series? Introducing the HOLGA 120N.

I'm willing to bet that most of the people interested in my camera gear commentary already know quite a bit about holgas. I'd also be willing to bet that anyone who shops at Urban Outfitters or walks the streets of hip (read: gentrified) neighborhoods, is also familiar with this camera. This camera is mighty popular and I don't think its necessary to write a lengthy post on it. There are lots of great resources on this camera and you could spend a decade looking at Holga pictures on Flickr.

So, I'll load you up with a reference list (below). Tell you that I love it (because I do). Tell you why I love it (because it's cheap, easy and makes pretty pictures). And I'll advise (best in bright sunlight, tape or velcro the sides, try shooting from the hip). Enjoy!

Sometimes I need to unplug. With the world at your fingertips (and DSL connection), the internet can be a massive distraction when sitting down to write.

I was taught by many a writing teacher to spend at least 30 minutes to 1 hour of each day writing. A majority also say it's best to do this daily working of writing muscles in the morning...like as soon as you wake up. Sometimes, rolling out of bed and writing is the absolute last thing I want to do (much like exercising) but I do believe it's a necessity.

Prior to the age of constant connectivity, it was much easier to accomplish the task of morning writing. For me, it takes usually no more than 10 minutes of consistent typing before I'm rambling away about god knows what (that's okay, the point is just to be writing). But now that the internet is a mere click away, it's far too easy to get distracted. And for those who don't know me well...I have a Google problem. I will Google anything at any time...I'll even admit to the time that I panicked because I didn't have access to Google. You get the point; it's a distraction at some very inopportune times.

So, about a year ago I decided to revisit my old methods of production...the typewriter. I have two (I know...no one needs two typewriters in 2011) : the Royal Futura and the Smith Corona Galaxie. The loud and stiff clanking of keys makes me feel like a writing rockstar and reminds me of my poetry-writing youth. I'm digging so deep into my youth, I might start wearing a beret again. Yes, I spent an entire year wearing a black beret, red scarf and military-issued steel toed boots...I was angsty.

Bullshitting aside, using a typewriter again has been a tremendous help. I sit at an empty table (not my cluttered desk that is covered in to-do items) and face a window that views trees and the influx of cardinals and blue jays that visit in the mornings. I can only be distracted by birds for so long and then I'm writing. 30 minutes flies by and 1 hour is barely noticeable...sometimes it's the best damn part of my entire day. So, I suppose this is a love letter to my typewriters...thank you for being incredibly simple and contributing to the (rare) zen moments of my day.

Any other writers out there? Any combating distraction tricks to share?

Testing new film gives me yet another excuse to photograph the little details in my home that make me happy. This is my wooden deer. I love him.

On to more important things...I adore the new 600 (integral) color film from Impossible Project (for Polaroid cameras). I might not have such a hard time letting go of the remainder of my Polaroid stash since I know great integral film is around the bend. More gushing to come.

I have a little addiction (it really is minor in relation to my other addictions) : cookbook collecting. And really, I wouldn't even call it an addiction if I didn't insist on buying these pretty books and then never actually using them. I have a problem with following directions...I don't. So, I just buy cookbooks with pretty pictures and nice layouts then ogle them for years and years. I "reference" them regularly but can't seem to bring myself to execute the recipes. Now I've collected too many and need another bookcase devoted solely to the books I never use appropriately. That makes me feel a little guilty. So, I'm trying to scale back...I actually sold a few at my 30 for 30 mega yard sale last weekend. And now, I'm taking pictures of my current favorites because it seems fitting to find another nontraditional use for these books.

For your reference :

Chocolate & Zucchini : Purchased because I love her blog and fret that one day I won't be able to access all of her fantastic recipes online.
Seriously Simple : Pretty pictures + great inspiration.
Barefoot Contessa Back to Basics : Uhhh hello Barefoot Contessa will rock your world and this is my fave of all her books. Filled with those little tricks that make you look like you went to culinary school.
French Feasts : This is definitely the most unique cookbook I've ever seen. Whimsical illustrations + simple (but perfect) photography + French culture + the most nonthreatening authentic French recipes = AMAZING. Oh, and the pages smell good (for those that enjoy that scent of matte paper...I do).
Real Life Entertaining : Jennifer Rubell was the talent behind most of Domino (RIP) mag's food & entertaining features...her recipes are simple, unique and creative. A great gift for the friend that loves to host.
Food for Friends : Easy and slightly refined comfort food for groups...and party inspiration.
The Instant Cook : if you've never seen the photography and styling awesomeness of Donna Hay then prepared to have your mind blown.

Polaroid SLR 680 SE

As you are probably starting to notice, I love Polaroid and use more than my fair share of their cameras. While I adore almost anything manufactured by Polaroid (before 1990), one particular camera receives more adoration and praise than the rest : the Polaroid SLR 680. Introduced in 1982 (the year I was born...a coincidence that I use as yet another excuse to blow all my money on instant film) and discontinued in 1987, this integral film camera picks up where the SX-70 cameras ended.

Before I jump into specifics...a quick review of instant film types because all the lingo can get really confusing. Remember the post about the Reporter SE? Probably not...but in the beginning of that post I mentioned the differences between pack film and integral film. If you need a refresher, click here.

The Polaroid SLR 680 accepts integral film, in particular type 600. Type 600 film is NOT the same as SX-70 film (except that they are both integral films) and to my knowledge it would require some modifications to your camera for it to accept the SX-70 stuff. So, if you are thinking about purchasing the 680 SLR, don't waste your money buying SX-70 film. To make it even more confusing : type 600 cameras do accept type 779 film, which is occasionally found on ebay. Bottom line is that if you want to use a type 600 camera (like this particular model) you can purchase the new Silvershade film from the Impossible Project or spend your life savings on type 600 or type 779 film, found on ebay.

The Polaroid SLR 680 is different from most other type 600 cameras because it is a SLR (single lens reflex). Unlike the commonly found models (click here), this camera allows you to control focus which is imperative if you want to take pictures of anything besides landscapes (that is my opinion).

While it is definitely larger and heavier than the SX-70 SLR models, it's not a big enough difference to really matter. Unlike the SX-70 SLR's, it has a built-in electronic flash (no need for flash bars or a detachable flash) that automatically tilts based on the focusing distance (soooo helpful).

My favorite features of this camera are the lens and the ability to manually adjust all the automatic functions (i.e. the focus and flash). So, if you are feeling lazy you can rely on the automatic flash and focus but most of the time I adjust these features manually for more control. Control is key for me and instant film. All it takes it the flip of the switch to turn off the autofocus and flash...super simple. In regards to the lens...I happen to think it's the best damn Polaroid lens with the exception of maybe the packfilm Zeiss lens models.

My particular model is a SE model. SE = Special Edition. I don't think there is any actual difference in functionality or features between the standard and SE models...just looks. Around 1990, a similar model was produced, the 690 SLR. From what I hear, it is just as fantastic as the 680 but I've never played with one to have a real opinion.

Ultimately, I bought this camera because at the time (5ish years ago), SX-70 film was nearing extinction and type 600 film was still widely available in practically any drugstore (ahhhh the good ol' days). I wanted SLR capabilities with film that was still in production. Now, I own both a SX-70 and this model. I love them both but I tend to pick up the 680 because I trust its exposure choices (light meter) more than my SX-70. And sometimes the choice is made for me because I have significantly more type 600 film than the SX-70 stuff. Either way, I'm of the thinking that non-SLR Polaroids are a waste of pricey Polaroid (or Impossible Project) film. SLR Polaroids give you control which is exactly what I want when I only have 8 - 10 exposures at upwards of $25 a pack. You feel me?

NOTES & Resources
* What perfect timing...I just visited the Impossible Project site and found that they are selling the SLR 680. Now, I would NEVER pay $700 for this camera (which is what they are charging) but I thought it was coincidence worth mentioning.

p.s. I paid about $75 for mine on ebay. And they originally retailed for around $180 back in the 80's.

The brown feather and ivory feather pieces were made by Alice Hart Couture. Unfortunately, I can't find the designer who made the silk flower; she doesn't seem to still be around on etsy...which is a shame because that vintage silk is a textile wet dream.

Food Polaroids.

To say that I'm a hoarder of Polaroid film is a massive understatement. I've spent the last two or three years meticulously planning how and when I would use the last of my stash. I'll even admit to the fact that the dilemma of when to shoot Polaroid has kept me up at night. But I made a promise to myself that I would no longer fret about when to indulge in some film-tastic instant gratification and that I would just shoot it till it's gone. So, one by one I'm treasuring each of these last moments with my beloved film.

These images are from my second to last pack of SX-70 Blend film. I can't even find the words to express how much I adore this film...there is nothing quite like it (fellow Polaroid lovers know exactly what I'm talking about). I don't think I've ever been so attached to a film before (which is weird considering my film obsessive nature and considering how many of my favorite films have been discontinued in recent years). This is my Kodachrome (sorry to all that are mourning the loss of that great film). And since I can't bare to spend $40 - $60 a pack on ebay; I'm pretty sure I need to prep myself for the end. Yes, there are other integral instant films...but again, nothing like this one. So, last week I used an entire pack (all but one are shown here) on a few of my favorite food-related things. As I put this post together, I kept singing one of my favorite songs, My Favorite Things (the Supremes version), so I'm including a lovely video of that as well. Yes, I enjoy this song year round (just like the Charlie Brown Christmas soundtrack and Last Christmas by Wham)...I have no shame. Enjoy.
